More Awards in 2013 for the Year 2012

  • COSTA BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD:


    British writer Hillary mantel made literary history as she won the prestigious Costa Book of the Year award for her second book, Bring Up The Bodies, in her trilogy on Thomas Cromwell. Mantel, who became the first woman to win the Booker prize twice, has now become the first writer to win both the Costa Book of the year Award and the Booker prize in the same Year. Mantel was a bookie favourite to win the overall Prize.


    PRESS PHOTO OF THE YEAR AWARD:


    A photo by Paul Hansen of Sweden for Degens Nyheter wins the 2013 World Press photo of the year. It shows two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and her three-year-old brother Muhammad, who were killed when their house was destroyed by an Israeli missile strike. Their father Fouad was also killed and their mother was put in intensive care. In the Picture, Fouad’s brothers carry his children to the mosque for the burial ceremony as his body is carried behind on a stretcher in Gaza City, Palestinian Territories, on November 20, 2012.


    SKODA ART PRIZE 2012:


    Karnataka-born artist L.N. Tallur, whose works depict majorly the underbelly of India, has won the Rs1 million skoda Prize 2012 for contemporary art, from among a shortlist of four artist-including an artist collective.


    THE HINDU LITERARY PRIZE:


    Journalist-author Jerry Pinto bagged The Hindu Literary Prize 2013 for His novel Em and the big Hoom. The book, published by Aleph Book co, is Mr. Pinto’s first work of fiction and is set in Mahim, Mumbai which revolves around how a four-member family copes with the mother’s and her suicidal ideation.


    INDIRA GANDHI PEACE PRIZE:


    Ela Bhatt was on February 18 awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for peace, Disarmament and Development 2011 by the President for lifetime achievements in empowering women through grassroots entrepreneurship.


    SAHITYA AKADEMI AWARD PRESENTED:


    Sahitya Akademy president Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari presented the Sahitya Akademy Award-2012 to Jeet Thayil at Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi on February 18.


    VYAS SAMMAN:


    The Vyas Samman award instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation recognizing outstanding literary works, has been conferred on Dr Narendra Kohli, a well-known Hindi writer for his novel Na Bhooto Na Bhavishayti for the Year 2012. Na Bhooto Na Bhavishayti, Published in 2004, is a historical novel that portrays swami Vivekanand and the era he belongs to. It provides and account of the incredible impression that Swami cast on the history of the country.


    SPELL BEE INDIA SPELL 2013:


    The battle of words finally came to an ecstatic end with 14-year-old Vaswati Das from Guwahati emerging as the winner and Atreyee Hosal (14) from Bangalore being the runner-up at the national finals of HDFC Life Spell Bee India Spell 2013, powered by the Times of India. The winner and runner-up, along with other participants, were felicitated by Soha Ali khan in an event at a south Mumbai hotel on February 25.


    BERLIN FILM FEST:


    The 63rd Berlinale International Film Festival held in Berlin on February 16. Romanian film Child’s Pose directed by Calin Peter Netzer and produced by Ada Soloman won the Golden Bear for best film.
