Indian Cinema – History and Fast Facts

Indian Cinema:

Indian Cinema’s cavalcade has completed its successfully 100 years on 3^rd May, 2013. It was started with black & white films which has no sound. In this period some movies touched the hearts of the peoples and some movies helps to recover from stresses of the life. Some movies also created big splash in the world. Raja Harishchandra Indian cinema’s first silent film, was released on 3 May 1913. This film industry was begun with a little effort. And today it is a huge industry in the world and Indian Cinema has established many Mile Stone. Now India is the world’s largest producer of films. The female roles in the film were played by male actors in the starting era. The first Indian chain of cinema theatres was owned by the Calcutta entrepreneur Jamshedji Framji Madan, who oversaw production of 10 films annually and distributed them throughout the Indian subcontinent. Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu was an Indian artist and the first to build and own cinema hall’s in Madras. Sant Tukaram, a 1936 film based on the life of Tukaram, a Varkari Sant and spiritual poet, was screened at the 1937 edition of Venice Film Festival and thus became the first Indian film to be screened at an international film festival. The film was subsequently adjudged as one of the three best films of the year in the World. The Indian Masala film slang used for commercial films with song, dance, romance etc. came up after the world war-II. Some of the most critically acclaimed Indian films of all time were produced during the period from 1940s to 1960s. This period is called the golden age of Indian Cinema.

First film of Indian Cinema: Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who is known as Dadasaheb Phalke produced “Raja Harishchandra” which was the country’s first film and was released on 3 May 1913. The film was made in Marathi. The film was prepared in single print. But remember at that time, it was not deemed fair to work in films; still over 1,300 silent films got made by the year 1930. It is argued that the first Indian film released in India was Shree pundalik a silent film in Marathi by Dadasaheb Torne on 18 May 1912 in Mumbai. But it does not deserve the honour of being called the first Indian film because it was a photographic recording of a popular Marathi play, and because the cameraman, a man named Johnson was a British national and the film was processed in London.

First Talking Film: Ardeshir Irani directed ‘Alam Ara’ was the first talking film and released on 14 March, 1931. It was a love story of Prince and the Gypsy girl. The film was based on the Parsi play. Its music was also quite famous. And ‘Bhakta Prahlada’ (Telugu), produced and directed by H.M. Reddy, released on 15 September 1931 and ‘Kalidas’ (Tamil) produced by Ardeshir Irani and directed by H.M. Reddy released on 31 October 1931. These two films are south India’s first talkie films to have a theatrical release.

Love on the screen: In the year 1933, in the film ‘Karma’ kissing scene was shown on the screen for the first time.  The actress Devika Rani kissed her real life husband Himansu Rai. Because of this first time scene, it was criticized a lot of.

The first colour film: In the year 1937, a film released ‘Kisan Kanya’ was the first colour film of Indian cinema, made by Pearl Gidwani. And it was also presented by Ardeshir Irani. It was based on a story of a poor farmer and his troubles.

The first Cannes Award: The film “Neecha Nagar (1946)” directed by Chetan Anand was the first Indian film to win Palm de Ore Award at Cannes Film Festival (1946). Uma Anand, Kamini Kaushal, Johra Sehgal acted in the film.

Other records: In 1957, film “Mother India” was nominated for the Oscar in foreign language category, but it could not win the award, but Mehboob Khan’s this film established many records of success.

First Oscar awards: Indian Cinema has established the reorganization of it self in the world. The Bollywood is continuously giving good movies but could not win the world’s biggest film’s award, ‘Oscar Award’. By now, officially 45 films has been sent for the nomination for Oscar award but only three movies could get the nomination for Best foreign film category, Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988) and Lagaan (2001). Some other are Madhumati (1958), The Guide (1965), Reshma Aur Shera (1971), Manthan (1977), Saransh (1984), Parinda (1989), Rudali (1993), Arth (1999), Devdas (2002), Rang De Basanti (2006), Pipli live (2010), Barfi (2012).

All Time Hit: Film ‘Sholay’ directed by Ramesh sippy is first Indian film to celebrate Silver Jubilee in hundred Cinema halls which broke the all records of success. The story of the film wrote famous author Saleem Khan. In this film star cast were Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and etc.

The first 3D film: Malayalam movie ‘My Dear Kuttichetan’ dubbed in Hindi film ‘Chhota Chetan’ was first Indian 3D film and it was also quite success. It had been very much liked by children.

Still Running: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starring movie “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ is still running in Mumbai’s ‘Maratha Mandir’ cinema. It is world’s the longest running film. This film was presented by Aditya Chopra in 1995.
